Geography also plays a role — the same skill set may command $110k in a mid-size market and $150k in a tech hub or at a well-funded company.
For pre-IPO startups, equity can be worth significantly more than the base salary difference — or worth nothing. Evaluate the company's funding stage, growth trajectory, and liquidity timeline. At public companies, RSUs have clear value and should be factored into total compensation. A general guideline: ensure your base salary covers your living expenses comfortably, then optimize for equity at companies with strong growth prospects.
