Staff engineers operate at a broader organizational level, defining technical direction across multiple teams, solving cross-cutting architectural problems, and influencing engineering culture. Staff roles require stronger communication skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to drive alignment on complex technical decisions without direct authority.
This depends on what energizes you. The IC track (senior → staff → principal) lets you deepen technical expertise and solve increasingly complex problems. The management track focuses on growing people, building teams, and organizational effectiveness. Many companies now offer equivalent compensation for both tracks. Consider what you find most rewarding: solving hard technical problems or helping others grow and removing organizational blockers.
Senior interviews typically include system design sessions where you architect solutions for real-world problems at scale, coding exercises focused on problem-solving approach rather than trick questions, behavioral interviews exploring leadership and decision-making, and deep dives into past projects. Many companies also evaluate your ability to communicate trade-offs, collaborate with interviewers, and think about operational concerns like monitoring and failure modes.
